Leadership Transitions at SMART-NERC

Brothers and Sisters,

One of our own, Brother Bob Butler, has been given the distinct honor of being appointed as an International Representative with the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail, and Transportation Workers. 

This well-earned appointment is a testament to Bob’s decades of steadfast leadership, tireless advocacy, and unwavering commitment to the members our Local unions. Throughout his career, Brother Butler has led with integrity and a deep sense of responsibility to the members he serves. 

Brother Butler’s roots in Local 17 and the labor movement in New England run deep. He entered the Local 17 apprenticeship program at the JATC in Dorchester in 1986, graduated in 1991, and went on to serve the membership in nearly every leadership role possible for the next four decades.

His service includes roles as Local 17 General Fund trustee, Executive Board member, JATC trustee, Business Agent, Business Manager, Vice President of Massachusetts AFL-CIO, and most recently, President of SMART-NERC, a position he has held since 2021.

As he steps into his new role at the International level, Brother Butler brings the voice, values, and priorities of Northeast Regional sheet metal workers with him. We thank him for his years of service and leadership, and look forward to continuing to stand and fight alongside him as he takes on this new role.

Leadership Appointments Moving Forward

In response to this transition, we are proud to announce that the Executive Council has made the following leadership appointments, effective Friday, February 6th:

  • Russell Bartash has been appointed President of the SMART Northeastern Regional Council
  • Robert Maloney has been appointed Financial Secretary-Treasurer of SMART Northeastern Regional Council

Both leaders have strong experience and a deep commitment to serving the membership. Their appointments ensure that the work of the Council continues without interruption and that members remain fully represented at every level of our union.
